Get those Lubbock project ideas in!

In case you weren’t aware, the Lubbock City Council has appointed a citizen panel to solicit ideas for civic improvements that would go before the voters as bond issues this November. The deadline to submit ideas for civic projects online is one week from now — June 10.

To submit an idea for a civic project, go to mylubbock.us and click on the Citizen Advisory Commission link on the right side of the screen (and then click on suggest a project to submit your idea).

I think the City of Lubbock would benefit the most from improvements to 34th Street, Library improvements (we did just lose an entire branch library after all), and reasonable improvements to downtown (such as improvements to our civic center).

I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting to mention some worthwhile potential projects, but that’s what the comments are for…

I actually attended 2 of the 3 committee meetings and discouraged any athletic fields and recommended only roadwork for 34th and 50th streets. I reminded committee that even if Lubbock residents voted for $65 MILLION in bonds city would have to raise taxes substantially just to service new debt and 3 council members and mayor face voters in May of 2010 and property tax increase could result in backlash if voters get higher tax rate in August of this year that would result in bigger taxbills next year right before May election. The “soccer” crowd had a few people but contrary to media reports less than 20 citizens attended last 2 committee meetings and even several committee members including AJ guy Burle Pettit were absent from the meetings. Christy Martinez also failed to attend the last 2 meetings. City has already maxed out credit for forseeable future(animal shelter, other projects) so a bond issue would still mean money couldn’t be borrowed until late 2010 even if voters ok bonds this year. City is so poorly managed that current council makes previous councils look good. Current city council is riding a “cute $1 BILLION” in debt so new debt must be rationed.
