Manifest destiny is one of those ideas that got rolled into the modern, right-wing version of American Exceptionalism, along with the lie that we are a Christian Nation(tm).

With Obama as President, I think the rest of the world will believe what we are selling when we talk about our democratic ideals.

I very much like your comment about America being the melting pot of cultures and ideas. Too often there's a push by myopic extremists that want to have America be a Christian nation engaged in manifest destiny. Instead, considering the immigrant roots of America and our common humanity regardless of background and culture is an excellent way to be proud of our origins and our new direction with Obama. That levels the playing field from *exceptionalism* to, as you said, partners with the world.
