Lubbock GOP: Asleep or Stirring?
Tomorrow night (Thursday 10/25) the Republican Party of Lubbock is having their third quarterly Executive Committee meeting of 2007 at conflict-of-interest central, aka McDougal Conference Center. It’s scheduled for an hour and a half with Carl Isett as a speaker.
To me, the circumstances of their meeting suggest that the Lubbock Republicans are in a holding pattern and not really engaged in serious work. An hour and a half for a whole quarter’s worth of business in addition to a speaker suggests that the Republican Party of Lubbock is in theater mode right now. Their Chairman, John Steinmetz, is even sporting a Carson Tucker style bowtie on their website.
Of course, this is no reason for Lubbock progressives to let their guard down. Other, more active groups like the Lubbock Area Republican Women are probably getting things done, judging by the frequency of their meetings and the number of elected officials among their members and officers.
So the real question is: what are you doing to take advantage of the lull before campaign season hits?

Recently John “Kid” Steinmetz announced the beginning of candidate registration when in reality precinct chairs could file 2 months ago. Steinmetz was so clueless that he thought that precinct chairs were elected at the poll after polls closed. His secretary did enlighten him that in fact precinct chairs have to put in a candidate form and face voters IF 2 or more want the office. If only one seeks the office they are elected by default just like any unopposed public office does.
Steinmetz is a former Texas Tech student body president that is from Ft.Worth and is virtually clueless on the way local government operates. He never attended any townhall meetings and never organized any forums with elected officials. Steinmetz also discontinued quarterly precinct chair meetings(against the by-laws) and left headquarters locked up and abandoned for most of the time. Many precinct chairs have virtually quit attending (R) functions and Steinmetz idea of guest speakers are Donald May,Carl Isett and Robert Duncan by phone. I left (R)executive committee for good after the “rabid” Right To Life republicans virtually “poisoned” the atmosphere at local republican headquarters. Mikel Ward was vocal in saying “This chairman is virtually invisible”. Steinmetz is actually handled by former chairmen Mark Griffin (”truck stop republican”) and Scott “bankruptcy” Mann. It’s thought that Roger Settler will run against Steinmetz(AGAIN)but local republican site was destroyed by Steinmetz recently and replaced with a barely readable local officials page. Apparently he did not take Computer Science at Texas Tech. Local republican party has become a comical act of sleazy incumbents and “alleged” party officials.
