About the Lubbock Power and Light $1mil Gift
The Lubbock City Budget that passed on Thursday with a split Council includes a one million dollar transfer from Lubbock Power and Light to the City.
Abel Cruz over at El Editor has, I believe, the correct perspective on the million dollar transfer in his editorial. The voters already spoke clearly about the separation of LP&L from the City Council and the manner in which franchise fees will be paid to the city. What happened Tuesday at the LP&L Board meeting and Thursday at the City Council meeting was not what voters had in mind, and it smacks of a time when the City would raid the coffers of LP&L whenever it was politically convenient.
All I can say is that I hope this is a one-time incident. The City Council and the LP&L Board should work out an equitable franchise fee system that makes economic sense and respects the wishes of Lubbock voters.

Lefty,
Let me play Lefty for a moment: Poor minimum wage workers, their $0.25 bus fare increase is equal to a tax increase for them of $125 per year while businesses and home owners get a $25 per year tax decrease. It is unfair to place the burden of taxes on those least able to pay.
How am I doing ?? - doesn’t this sound Liberal ????
Next: Let me play “Compassionate Conservative”: the poor have enjoyed a free ride for too long. They should pay their own way. The minimum wage went up and most of them said it was OK to raise the fare.
Isn’t this the perfect Compassionate mantra ????
City Council has 3 Liberals - Deleon, Price, and Jones
City Council has 4 Compassionate Conservatives - Miller, Leonard, Gilbreath, and Klein.

I think it’s a little less clear-cut on the council, but that is how the votes divided over the budget this time.
And you know I don’t think there is really such a thing as “compassionate conservative.” More often than not It’s “I don’t have anything against you but stay away from me” conservatism.
You do play a pretty good Lefty, though. Now I know who to call when I need a stunt double… :)

Lefty,
I’d be honored. As Debra Harry says “Call me ! Call me Call me Call me any any any time, Call me !”
